OneKirk Spring Conference: What kind of church?

What Kind of Church - Welcome

  • What does it mean when we say “All Are Welcome”?
  • What limits are there on God’s hospitality?
  • What can the Kirk offer to society to benefit human relationships?

This second OneKirk conference on the theme of “What kind of church?” offers a space for open and honest discussion about these questions for everyone in the church.

What kind of welcome?
Speaker: Rev Prof George Newlands
(Professor Emeritus of Divinity, Glasgow University and author of “The Hospitable God”)

The morning session will begin with worship and an opening talk from Rev Prof George Newlands on the theme of welcome and hospitality within the church. This will be followed by a choice of workshops.

Workshops on Welcome and Inclusion

Each workshop will be approximately 45 minutes, and attendees will have the opportunity of attending two of the four workshops during the morning.

“Welcoming Children and Young People”

led by Jen Roberston
(Schools/Churches Youth Development Worker for Hamilton Presbytery/SU Scotland)

“Welcoming People with Learning Disabilities”

led by Rev Gayle Taylor
(People with Learning Disabilities Working Group)

“Welcoming People with Dementia”

led by Prof June Andrews
(University of Stirling)

“Welcoming Prisoners and their Families”

led by Dr Nancy Loucks and Rev Donald Scott
(Families Outside)

What kind of relationship?
Speaker: Rev Tom Gordon
(formerly chaplain of Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh)

The afternoon session will look at relationships (aware that there is a major report coming to the General Assembly in May on marriage) and will provide opportunity for group discussion on issues within the Kirk and society.
